The Squadron regularly takes part in expeditions organised at unit and national level.

There will be opportunities throughout your time with the Squadron to organise and participate in various national and international expeditions.

Cadets from the Squadron recently took part in

Expedition Volcano Eagle

This saw them travelling to Ecuador, building a playground for a remote school and then trekking and mountain biking up some of the highest peaks in the world and in some of the most breathtaking scenery.

Naturally, before you get to do this sort of trip we need to teach you the basics. You'll learn all the skills you need at the Squadron. Once you've done a few simple expeditions, probably in connection with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, you'll be ready to take on bigger challenges.

As part of the D of E scheme cadets are expected to plan, prepare undertake an adventurous journey in an unfamiliar, remote environment.

Differing levels of adventure or exploration are required for the different levels of the award and cadets are expected - as part of the award programme - to undertake practice journeys before going on any expedition and also to complete a report of their journey.

The Training syllabus for expeditions includes:

  1. Safety and Emergency Procedures
  2. Basic First Aid
  3. Navigation
  4. Route Finding
  5. Map Reading and Compass Skills
  6. Care of equipment
  7. Camp Craft
  8. Country Code

Some of the above components are covered by the cadet's training syllabus, and many cadets will take part in other adventure training activities with the Air Cadets, so they will be well prepared by the time they take part in their expedition.
